How to Properly Care for Your Cutting Board
A good cutting board isn’t just a kitchen tool — it’s an heirloom. With the right care, your board will serve you for years, gaining character and beauty along the way. At Yellow Cottage, we believe every board tells a story, and proper maintenance ensures that story lasts.
1. Wash Gently
Always hand wash your cutting board with warm water and a mild dish soap. Use a soft sponge or cloth, and avoid soaking the board or leaving it submerged in water.
Never put your board in the dishwasher. The heat and water exposure can warp, crack, and strip the wood of its natural oils.
2. Dry Immediately
After washing, dry your board right away with a clean towel. Stand it upright to allow air circulation on all sides. This prevents moisture from getting trapped, which can cause the wood to swell or split.
3. Oil Regularly
Wood needs nourishment. Apply a food-safe mineral oil or board conditioner about once a month — or more often if you cook daily. Simply rub the oil in with a soft cloth, let it soak overnight, and wipe away any excess the next morning.
This step restores moisture, protects against cracking, and enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain.
4. Remove Stains & Odors
For lingering odors (like garlic or onion), rub the board with half a lemon and coarse salt, then rinse and dry. This natural method cleans, deodorizes, and refreshes your board without harsh chemicals.
5. Store Upright
Always store your board upright or in a well-ventilated spot. Avoid stacking boards flat on top of each other — trapped moisture can lead to warping or mildew.
